SNS 092: But Sovereign God, Psalm 64

Can I just say that I have found three profoundly beautiful words of encouragement in this psalm? They are, “But Sovereign God.” Three little words that say so much. Indeed, when life is out of hand, the pain faced is real, and the attitude of those causing the pain is, at best, callous, then these words are very encouraging indeed. Well, let’s first hear the psalm. Then we’ll chat about it.

Also, before beginning, I am proud to say that this podcast is now sponsored by our book, Psalms 1-72, A Simple Not Shallow Presentation. This book is a collection of the Psalms, as heard on the Psalm Tuesday episodes. It is available as a paperback and as an e-book. In this book, God’s word is presented in a manner that helps reveal the prayerfulness of the poetry of the Psalms, allowing you a deeper connection, a deeper relationship with him.  That is exciting! I’ve provided a couple of links in the show notes for this episode. One to my website where you can learn more about this book and then one to where it is located on Barnes and Noble.com and the other to its location on Amazon.com, just for your convenience. So, go ahead and collect your copy today.

But, for now, my name is Charles, Charles Yerkes, and this is Psalm Tuesday here on the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. This podcast is for those who want a deeper faith and not an aggressively mediocre one. Psalm Tuesday is a series in which we will listen to a psalm being read in a manner that honors their original use as part of a worship service. SNS 090: The Secret for Being Untroubled, Psalm 62

Can I say that I am amazed and in awe of the sheer humanity I find in the Psalms? For instance, in this psalm, number 62, I see a peace of mind, a quiet certainty, a sublimely untroubled state of mind that many today are dreaming about but never able to discover for themselves. It is beyond awesome; it is comforting and reassuring. And the Psalmist shares his secret for being so at peace. He says…. Well, let’s first hear the psalm. Then we’ll chat about it.

SNS 051: The Abundant Life, Gritty and Real, Psalm 23, Psalm Tuesday

There is perhaps no Psalm that is more popular that this one, the 23rd Psalm. Sometimes called The Shepherd’s Psalm. You know it, right? “The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.” We love the phrases: I shall not want, green pasture, still water, he restores my soul, preparing a table. What wonderful promises for us…? Yet, what if they are not promises to us at all? What if this Psalm is not about us at all? What if it is completely about praising God for what he has already done? I mean, don’t get me wrong, these are all wonderful things, and yes, God, as the good shepherd, does these things for us. But what if there is something even deeper, more profound going on?

SNS 042: Some Subtle Connections, Psalm 14, Psalm Tuesday

One of the things I love about the Bible is how subtle connections are often made between things. For instance, in this Psalm, acting prudently, with insight, is equated with searching intently for God. This also connects the doing of deeds in a loathsome and heinous manner with any deed done while not intently searching for God. How intriguing is that? Anyway, take a listen and tell me what other connections you find here.

Have you ever felt forgotten by God? Ever wonder how long he will keep hiding himself from you? The Psalmist in this episode absolutely felt this way. His response is both brutally honest and also full of hope.
